It was my second step on a fifty year journey.

“Hey, Old Lady.”

“Hey, Old Man.”

“My first Disability Check was in the mail.” Her eyes got wide. She turned her head to the side, looking at me. “How much was it?”

“It was $8,400.” She ran to hug me, jumping up and down. “We’re rich.”, she whispered.

“That was the first check. It’s retroactive. Next month, on the first Monday of every month, I’ll get a check mailed for $400. Every month.” She started jumping and hugging me again.

“Can we go shopping?”, she asked.

“Shopping for what?”

“For a new Water Bed. Some groceries so I can start cooking for you again. Get you some new shoes. Your Jungle Boots are all worn out.”

“OK, I’d like to go shopping too.”

“Shopping for what?”, she asked.

“The new 1972 Ford Pinto just came out. We should buy one.”

“A new car would be wonderful. Let’s do that first!”, she nodded her head yes.

“I agree, we should get a new car, but there’s a catch.”

“A catch?”

“We need to get married to finance a new car.”

“Is this a Marriage Proposal?”

“Yes, it is. Just think, in December, 2021 on our 50th Wedding Anniversary, we can tell everyone we got married to buy a car”
