Please, Don’t Drain the Swamp
Swamps are a living, critical environment.
If there were never any swamps, there would never have been Amphibians.
If there were no Amphibians, there would never have been Dinosaurs. If there were no Dinosaurs, there would never have been Birds.
If there were no swamps, there would never have been coal and oil deposits. If there were never any swamps, there would never have been an Industrial Revolution.
The negative aspects of coal and oil deposits were not a by-product of the Coal and Oil. They are a result of exploitation and greed.
A swamp mitigates storm surge. Storm surge mitigation helps limit damage from winds and flooding from rainstorms and Hurricanes — large volumes of plant life in the wetlands aid in mitigating saltwater intrusion and promote healthy swamp plant life.
Instead of draining swamps, we should be taking steps to protect them by way of protection strategies.
Swamp protection strategies include preventions to eliminate toxic untreated sewage flows into swamps. Rainstorm drain and retention and collection systems to allow filtering out toxins and trash. Return clean, pure water into the swamp ecosystem.
What about the Washinton DC swamp?
According to the National Park Service, 98% of the Washington DC area was NEVER a swamp.
The firm, dry riverbank of the Potomac, became the site of our capital. The White House and Capitol Hill, the home of the legislative branches of our government.
These focal points and many other monuments and buildings built during the 19th century were placed on a firm foundation, allowing them to remain standing.
Conclusion:
There is no Literal Swamp in our National Capital. There is, however, the persistent Perception of a Swamp. Our national capital site has existed and thrived for more than 200 years, serving our people’s needs.
The perception of a swamp is a direct inference to several causes.
- The constant bickering between opposing political factions
- Top-Down power structures, The Top Dog, runs everything
- Corporate and Private money fuels toxic ‘swamp syndrome’
Recommendation:
Just as in a natural environmental swamp, filter out toxins and trash.
